Mechanisms of action of acupuncture:

Increases blood flow, reduces inflammation: reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, stimulates the vagus nerve (Yang et al., 2023)

Stimulates the nervous system, e.g. endorphin release (Li et al., 2022)

Needle insertion deforms the extracellular matrix - mast cells and fibroblasts are activated (Liang et al., 2025)
